About Dr. Upson
Dr. Upson is a licensed psychologist who specializes in the treatment of Childhood
Disorders and who is dedicated to the health and wellness of children and adolescents and their families. In practice,
Dr. Upson is deeply committed to a focus on achieving wellness in all interconnected areas of life. As such, a full
scope of clinical services are offered to children and adolescents and their families. These services include individual psychotherapy
with children and adolescents, and family therapy; academic and behavior interventions; psychological assessment;
evaluation of autism and other developmental disabilities; group counseling; educational assessment; parent training/
education; and weight management. Dr. Upson has a broad base of knowledge of special education services, Student Support
Teams (SST), and developmentally appropriate interventions and does provide school consultation for parents to assist in informing
the educational decision making process. Child outcomes are often improved by ongoing communication and collaboration
between home, school, and community partners.
Dr. Upson earned her Ph.D. in 2004 from The University of Tennessee,
Knoxville. She completed an APA-approved predoctoral clinical internship at LSU Health Sciences Center and New Orleans
Public Schools. Internship rotations and postdoctoral training were in independent practice settings where she specialized
in work with abused and neglected children and adolescents. She has also completed advanced training in cognitive therapy
at the Atlanta Center for Cognitive Therapy. Dr. Upson has taught several graduate and undergraduate courses in education,
psychology, and child and adolescent development since 1999 and is currently an adjunct professor at Central Michigan University
off-campus graduate programs. For over three years, Dr. Upson served as a public reviewer of
grant applications with the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the largest scientific organization
in the world dedicated to research focused on the understanding, treatment and prevention of mental disorders. Dr. Upson has
presented on school-based intervention and mental health research at several national and local conferences.
Professional affiliations include the Georgia Psychological Association (GPA), the American Psychological Association (APA),
the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), and the Association for Play Therapy (APT).
