Initial
Assessment:
For all services requested, your first contact will consist of a clinical interview to
discuss your concerns, to gather information about your personal and family history, and to make recommendations to you about
what services might be most helpful. The initial clinical interview is typically followed by a battery of psychological
tests to assess learning, attention, memory, as well as interpersonal and emotional issues.
Testing:
Standard test batteries consist of cognitive and academic testing as well as psychological screening. The initial clinical
interview assists in evaluating whether additional tests should be administered to provide us with more information about
specific concerns. While services are primarily provided to children/ adolescents and families, psychological testing
is available for all age groups (children, adolescents, college age, adults) depending upon the particular concerns being
addressed.
Treatment Options
Individual Therapy:
The treatment approach is tailored to the needs of each individual child. Older children and teens may be seen in individual
therapy to help them better understand and accept challenges related to learning, behavior or adjustment issues and to help
build self-esteem. Social skills groups may be available for children who have difficulty interacting with peers.
Parent Guidance: Typically, parents are involved in the treatment process. Parents are provided
with guidance to help them address family problems from a constructive, problem-solving approach. Often, especially in
the case of children, the focus is on helping parents learn how best to help their child feel and function better.
School Consultations: By phone or on site.
Family therapy:
Guidance for both parents and teens in developing better communication and problem-solving skills.
Group therapy: Children often benefit greatly from an opportunity to interact with their peers
who are struggling with many of the same issues. Ask about ongoing groups and waiting lists for forming groups.
